J.R.R. Tolkien`s War in Middle Earth is a strategy game released in 1989 by Melbourne House. The game was released for Amiga, Apple IIgs, Atari ST and PC (DOS).

The story and the action of the game are loosely linked to the events presented in the novel. The game begins when Frodo Baggins receives a letter from Gandalf Gray informing him that he will immediately leave for Rivendell and keep an eye on Strider's friend. He also warns him of the approaching black horsemen who are in the area.

You start the game by controlling three hobbits: Frodo, Sam and Pippin. Your first task is to go to Rivendell. The game is divided into two main stages: map view and detailed view. On the map you can check where you are and the position of black riders. Most of the action of the game takes place in a detailed view - here you can, for example, decide about boahtering during combat, collect items, etc.
