Monuments of Mars is a single-player platform game inspired by Richard C. Hoagland's book Monuments of Mars - A City on the Edge of Forever. Released by Apogee Software in the early 1990s, it is a game set in outer space. The player takes on the role of an astronaut who is sent by NASA directly to Mars. A large number of astronauts died during the mission to explore the planet, so you, as NASA's best man, are selected to learn more about the title monuments and the reasons for the disappearance of your colleagues.


Monuments of Mars consists of four separate episodes: First Contact, The Pyramid, The Fortress and The Face. Each of them contains twenty one-screen stages, so there are as many as 80 separate platforms waiting for you to complete. During the game, at each stage, the player will collect various items and face deadly alien creatures. You will be equipped with a laser pistol for defense. The number of shots is limited, however, so don't be too quick to fire. Of course, it is possible to replenish the ammunition by collecting additional batteries.
